A scientist from Russia, on the eve of Hurricane Irma, which caused enormous damage to the islands of the Caribbean Sea and the coastal strip of the American state of Florida, provided his home with autonomous electricity and television communications. Inventor Abylay Ospan, who last year received a gold medal at the largest innovation exhibition in the United States INPEX (Inpex), spoke about this ForumDaily.

The house in which Ospan currently lives with his wife and three young children is located on the first line of the coast of the city of Miami, which was significantly damaged by the hurricane that hit Florida last weekend. Since then, all the buildings in the neighborhood, including the house of the Russian scientist, were left without central power supply, telephone communications, and cable television broadcasting. “The worst of the hurricane was on Miami Beach, where trees were knocked down, wires and communications were torn,” says Ospan. “Starting from Friday evening, the central power supply was turned off, and on Saturday the television stopped showing, and the telephone connection was experiencing great interference.”

However, a few months before the natural disaster, Abylai Ospan decided, if possible, to switch the supply of the house and land to solar energy. “Florida is the sunniest American state, and it would be a sin not to use what nature provides,” he noted. — About three months ago I bought 200 Watt batteries, a solar controller, batteries, an inverter, wires, as I planned to illuminate the area with the help of the sun. On the eve of the hurricane, I installed wires in the house, and throughout all these days we have light, we can simultaneously charge about 20 mobile phones, turn on the fan and live a full life.”

Ospana was useful and his own invention, for which he got a medal at the innovation show - a portable device called “Joker-TV”. “This is a lightweight box that allows you to watch television from anywhere in the world, available free of charge on air in a given region,” the scientist recalled, “for which you just need to connect the device via a USB cable to a computer, laptop or tablet.” Thanks to “Joker”, Abylay Ospan’s family watched online the local TV channel, news and all the information about Irma’s movements. “The channel broadcast around the clock, without advertising or interruptions, and we calmly tracked the hurricane’s route so that, if necessary, we could quickly leave the epicenter. Fortunately, this was not necessary, and our house remained safe and sound,” Ospan noted.

Most of the neighbors of the Russian scientist were evacuated in advance and have not yet returned, as they are waiting for their houses to be connected to the power supply. From time to time his acquaintances who live nearby visit his house to charge phones or find out the latest television news.
The natural disaster inspired the inventor to come up with new ideas. In particular, he, together with his like-minded colleagues, currently intends to promote the idea of ​​​​providing autonomous solar energy to buildings that are constantly at risk of hurricanes. “The devices that allow you to use solar energy are not so efficient now,” he complained. “However, if you transfer them to perovskite panels, the efficiency will increase several times and providing electricity will be 20 times cheaper.” “Solar energy is the near future, it is the lighting of residential buildings, cars, factories, a new world, on the threshold of which we are already standing,” the scientist especially noted. “At the same time, the sun is an absolutely environmentally friendly and cheap form of energy, especially in those regions where it shines all year round.”

Ospan also believes it is necessary to implement the idea of ​​​​preventing the formation of hurricanes by cooling the ocean surface as quickly as possible. “There is such an idea and it is very reasonable, since hurricanes form in areas of high water surface temperatures,” the scientist emphasized. “But if you bring pipes through which cold water will flow from the depths of the ocean to the surface, then it will be possible to prevent the formation of a disaster that constantly causes millions of losses to the economies of coastal countries.”
