The Ministry of Defense called the incident a terrorist attack. The Investigative Committee announced the initiation of a criminal case, without specifying under which article, reports Meduza.

According to Astra, the murder was sectarian. One of the commanders, Andrei Lapin, was allegedly indignant at the refusal of three soldiers (a Dagestani, an Azerbaijani and an Adyghe) to remain in the army and called the war with Ukraine "holy". Soldiers of Tajik origin (according to unofficial data, the second shooter, like Ehson Aminzoda, was from Tajikistan) declared that only the war of Muslims against infidels is sacred. Lapin allegedly called Allah a "weakling" or "coward" in response. At the shooting range, the Tajiks told the other Muslims to stand aside, shot Lapin and opened fire indiscriminately. They were killed by another soldier.

At the same time, Astra emphasized that by the time this information was published, it had not been able to confirm the identity of its source and the identity of the people whom he called participants in the conflict. According to him, there were three shooters, and their names were Bikzot, Ami and Anushe. The next day, Astra published a list of those who shot and those who died, and there were already two names of the alleged perpetrators - Rakhmonov Mehrob and Aminzod Tojiddin. And the list of the dead did not include the name of Andrey Lapin, who allegedly called Allah a “weakling”. The name of Nikolai Lipin appeared there, but he was called a "mobilized volunteer."
