Residents of a village in Romania were evacuated due to a Russian drone.

Romanian authorities have ordered the evacuation of residents of the village of Plauru, on the Danube River, which forms the border with Ukraine. The evacuation began after a drone struck a vessel carrying liquefied natural gas on the Ukrainian side of the river, according to reports. Radio Liberty.

In a statement released on November 17, the Romanian Ministry of Defence said its radar surveillance and monitoring systems had detected and tracked targets in Ukrainian airspace near Tulcea County, where Plauru is located.

It states that the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations was notified of the need to introduce public alert measures in the northern part of the district.

While the ministry said there had been no violations of Romanian airspace by unidentified aircraft, Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports in the Danube region have repeatedly triggered alerts in the NATO member state.

Russian drone incursions into Romanian and Polish airspace, as well as Russian military aircraft entering Estonian airspace, led NATO to implement the Eastern Sentry initiative to strengthen its air defenses.

Meanwhile, the European Union's executive body last month approved a five-year defence roadmap, including plans for a "drone wall" that is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The European Commission's plan, citing repeated violations of EU airspace by drones, states that Russia and Belarus pose the "greatest threat."

As the risk of further explosions remains, the Department of Emergency Management said people were being evacuated.

Gheorghe Mălădoi, deputy mayor of the Čeatalhioi commune, which includes the village of Plauru, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that some residents were temporarily housed in the town hall until the problem was resolved.

Local emergency services are helping evacuate people and animals to safer areas, he said.
