California restaurant forced employees to 'confess' to fake priest

A California restaurant is ordered to pay $140 in payroll and non-pecuniary damages to employees after it hired a fake priest to extract confessions of "sins" from workers, reports CNN.

Federal investigators call it the "most shameless" act of corruption an employer has committed against its employees.

The employee said owner Che Garibaldi, who runs two branches of Taqueria Garibaldi in northern California, hired a front priest. He listened to workers' "confessions", including asking them if they were late for work, if they stole money from a restaurant, or had "bad intentions" towards their employer.

The Catholic Diocese of Sacramento confirmed that it had not found "evidence of any connection" between the fake priest and their diocese.

"While we do not know who this man was, we are fully confident that he was not a priest of the Diocese of Sacramento," a spokesman for the diocese said.

Garibaldi and three other restaurant owners and operators were ordered to pay $140 in wages and damages to 000 employees. The restaurant will also have to pay $35 in administrative fines.

Investigators also found that the restaurant denied employees overtime pay, managers were given bonuses from the tip fund, and some employees faced "adverse immigration consequences" for cooperating with investigators.

"This employer's dastardly attempts to retaliate against the workers were aimed at silencing them, obstructing the investigation and obstructing the recovery of compensation," investigators said.
