The child was lost at the Miami airport due to the negligence of the airline: the mother thought that the girl was kidnapped

Monica Gilliam said she was horrified and thrilled when she found out her 12-year-old daughter was left alone wandering around Miami International Airport. American Airlines defaulted on its obligation to deliver the child to the father, reports NBC.

On July 2, a Tennessee mother sent her daughter Kimber on a flight from Chattanooga to Miami as an unaccompanied minor to visit her father.

The flight attendant was supposed to escort the child to his father after landing. She was also given a ribbon and bracelet with information about her father.

“They were supposed to escort her to the gate and hand her over to her father only after checking his ID against the information I gave them,” Gilliam said.

But this did not happen, as the mother said. Instead, the 12-year-old was left alone and wandered around the airport for about 30 minutes, Gilliam said.

“The thought that someone could take her is terrible,” the girl’s mother said. “I still have bad dreams about it.”

Kimber eventually called her father, who used FaceTime to help her read the signs so she could find him.

Gilliam said the airline didn't know the girl was missing. About an hour after she landed and found her father on her own, an American Airlines manager in Miami called her mother and said, "Your baby is missing."

The mother posted a video on TikTok detailing the horrifying experience. The video went viral with over a million views.

“I posted this video to help others and keep children safe,” she said.

In a statement, American Airlines said, “American Airlines cares deeply for our young passengers and is committed to providing them with a safe and enjoyable journey. We are taking these issues very seriously and are looking into what happened. The team contacted the client to learn more about their experience."

Gilliam said the airline tried to offer them free flights and limousine service, but she turned down their offers.

“We want American Airlines to tighten up their policies and provide additional training so this doesn't happen again,” she said.
