Destroyed buildings and dozens of deaths: a powerful earthquake hits Haiti

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 14 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Haiti on Saturday, August 7,2, with many deaths. Residents have shared images on social media of the ruins of concrete buildings, including the church that appears to have hosted the ceremony in Les Anglais.

People in the capital, Port-au-Prince, felt the tremors, and many ran out into the streets in fear.

The earthquake struck as Haiti was already mired in a web of political, humanitarian and security crises.

A month after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, the government is in turmoil, while many countries face growing hunger. The southern region, where the earthquake occurred, was confined to bandits in control of key areas.

The region has only recently recovered from Hurricane Matthew that struck in 2016. The element claimed the lives of hundreds of people and caused widespread destruction. Haiti is now in a tropical storm that could bring heavy rains early next week.
