Warm-up before winter: snowfall in the Midwest and northeast of the USA

Although the official start of winter in America is still more than a month away, the snow season has already opened in some regions of the country. A winter storm is moving toward the Midwest and northeastern United States, bringing "moderate snowfall," forecasters said.

The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center said the storm system will bring the first "moderate snowfall" to parts of the eastern Great Lakes, northern Mid-Atlantic and New England through Friday. Writes about this Fox News.

According to Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean, this week a series of light storms in the northern plains caused snow and rain in these regions, setting the stage for more winter weather.

"There's a little bit of cold air moving in that direction," Dean said on "Fox & Friends" Tuesday. — There is light snow in the forecast. No snow is expected along the coast, but moderate snowfall may be expected in the Great Lakes and inland Northeast regions.”

The WPC said two "powerful" cold fronts will move through the central and eastern U.S., bringing temperatures well below average everywhere between Thursday and early next week.

On Thursday, November 7, when a cold front takes place in the region, light rain and snow are expected in the northeast.

“As the front moves out of the New England coast on Friday, a low pressure system could develop and strengthen, resulting in some light to moderate snow,” the WPC said. “The greatest chance for snow accumulation greater than 4 inches (10 centimeters) currently extends from northern Pennsylvania into Maine, but there is still uncertainty about the exact amount and location.”

According to AccuWeather, in some parts of Pennsylvania and upstate New York, snow cover can range from 1 to 3 (2,5-5 cm) or from 3 to 6 inches (7,6-15,2 cm), while in New England the figures will be higher. Cold rain is likely to travel from Philadelphia to New York, and then further to Boston as the storm moves north.

Wet snow is also possible, since the first cold front will be held on Friday night, and on Sunday and Monday Great Lakes will cross the second, according to weather forecasters. Once the storm is gone, it is expected that cold temperatures will persist.

Temperatures below zero can cover territories from the southern to the central Mississippi on Saturday, and the minimum unambiguous numbers are possible on the northern plains on Monday.

“Colder air is forecast for next week with more chances for snowy weather,” Dean said.

Although winter will officially begin in America on December 21, government forecasters said there could be some "large swings" due to changing weather conditions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in its winter forecast that much of the U.S. is expected to experience warmer-than-average winter temperatures this winter, with a wetter-than-average period from December through February in northern areas of the country.

But weather forecasters acknowledged that global climate models that affect winter weather conditions are weak this year, making forecasts difficult.

The Farmers' Almanac, whose long-range forecast is "based on a mathematical and astronomical formula developed in 1818," states that "extremely cold winter conditions" will occur in areas east of the Rockies all the way into the Appalachians - the coldest outbreak of the season will occur in the last week of January and will continue into early February.

The Almanac said the coming winter will be "filled with plenty of highs and lows on the thermometer."
