Shooting at a church in Tennessee: an arrow stopped by a parishioner
In Tennessee, in the city of Antioch, in the vicinity of Nashville, 22-year-old man Robert Angle stopped an attack by an 25-year-old armed native of Sudan, Emanuel Kideg Samson.
Angle managed to get to his car, get a gun and keep Samson at gunpoint until the police arrived. As a result of the incident, the attacker injured himself in the chest, and Angle got a blow to the face with a pistol.
Angle commented on the events: “I don’t want to be considered a hero. The real heroes are the police officers, first responders, medical staff and doctors who helped me and all those affected.”
According to eyewitness Minerva Rosa, the pastor shouted “Run!” when an armed man entered the church, but he managed to open fire on the backs of the fleeing parishioners.
“He's incredible. Without him, I think things could have ended much worse. Our church is mostly elderly people. They wouldn’t have been able to leave her quickly,” she said.
According to the police, at the time of the attack, there were 42 people in the church, at least 1 people died and 6 people were injured. Among those injured were pastor Joey Spann and his wife Peggy. In the parking lot near the car of the suspect, the body of 39-year-old Melanie Smith was found.
Police say that during the struggle with Engle, the assailant shot himself in the chest, most likely unintentionally. After being released from the hospital, he was charged with murder. It is not yet clear what was the motive for the attack.
