Earlier than expected: Johnson & Johnson to begin human trials of coronavirus vaccine in July

Johnson & Johnson announced Wednesday, June 10, that an early human trial of a potential coronavirus vaccine will begin in the second half of July. This is much earlier than expected, as the initial test forecast was planned for September. Writes about it CNBC.

“Based on the strength of the preclinical data we have seen to date and interactions with regulators, we have been able to further accelerate the clinical development of our SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, Ad26.COV2-S,” said J&J Chief Scientific Officer Paul Stoffels.

The company began developing a vaccine against COVID-19 in January 2020.

She uses the same technology as when she created the experimental Ebola vaccine, which was given to people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the end of 2019. It involves a combination of the genetic material of a coronavirus with a modified adenovirus, which is known to cause common colds in humans.

J&J recently said that if the vaccine works well and is safe, the company could produce 600 million to 900 million doses by April 2021. On June 10, the company said it plans to ship more than 1 billion doses worldwide during 2021.

In early trials, J&J will test its vaccine on 1045 healthy adults aged 18 to 55 and adults aged 65 and over. All this will take place in the USA and Belgium.

Johnson & Johnson is one of several companies that are developing a potential vaccine to prevent COVID-19.

According to the World Health Organization, as of June 2, at least 124 vaccines are being developed. At least 10 of them are already in clinical trials.

National Institutes of Health and Moderna, a biotechnology firm, are actively working on a potential vaccine against COVID-19.

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Moderna plans to attract about 30 people when the third phase of trials begins in July.
