Amazon workers were provided with safety belts to prevent robots from killing them.

Amazon warehouse workers now wear safety belts so that robots that move across vast areas inside buildings don't accidentally kill a person by crashing into a warehouse.

The new device, The Robotic Tech Vest, is a special belt attached to a pair of suspenders and equipped with built-in sensors that alert robots to the presence of a person. Such belts have already been tested in 25 warehouses of the company, writes Fox News.

According to TechCrunch, the belts are designed to work consistently with obstacle detection systems built into robots.

Amazon employs more than 100 thousand robots. Their job is to help people transport packages and move large pallets of inventory. Although many believe that sooner or later these robots will displace humans from warehouses, Amazon recently added more than 300 new full-time jobs worldwide, although robots have been working in warehouses since 2012.

“Robots improve efficiency and safety in fulfillment centers. They allow you to store 40% more inventory, making it easier for Amazon Prime and other orders to be fulfilled on time because items are less likely to run out,” the company said in a blog post.

The company said that the new high-tech belt is the result of the improvement of existing security systems.

“In the past, employees would mark out a grid of cells where they would work so the robot could intelligently navigate a route around that area. The belt allows robots to detect a person even from a long distance and intelligently update their movement plan without having to clearly mark these areas,” said Amazon Robotics vice president Brad Porter in an interview with TechCrunch.

In December, two dozen workers at the Amazon factory were hospitalized after the robot sprayed them with a bear repellent.
