Walmart employees will go to college for a dollar a day

Admission to college has become much cheaper for Walmart employees.

Under the new benefits program, employees will pay the entire 1 dollar per day to receive a diploma, the company said Wednesday.

Walmart covers the remaining cost of tuition, fees and books.

All Walmart and Sam's Club employees in the US will be eligible for benefits as soon as they work for 90 days. This rule applies to all part-time employees, full-time employees and employees.

At the moment, the choice of degree is limited to the degree of Bachelor in Business Administration or Supply Chain, but the company can offer more options in the future, the representative said.

Employees must obtain a degree from one of three colleges: University of Florida, Brandman University or University of Bellevue. All three have online accredited programs designed for working adults.

Training will be provided by the company. Guild Educationwhich helps large employers expand educational benefits for their staff.

Employees who receive a diploma are not required to continue working in Walmart, Moreover, those who start training and leave the company in the process will not have to return Walmart money for courses already taken or to pay any fines.

About 1,4 million Walmart employees will be eligible for benefits. The company expects that 68 000 of them will participate in the first five years, based on enrollment in similar programs.

If the employee left the company or did not complete the training, the penalties are not intended.

In February, Walmart raised the minimum wage to $ 11 and issued one-time bonuses of up to $ 1000.

The new benefits and increased pay "increase pressure on other companies inside and outside the retail industry as it increases competition for the quality of employees," said Moody's lead analyst Charlie O'Shea.
