Work during a pandemic: companies that hire employees despite the crisis

Some companies, whose profile ranges from delivery to online training, hire employees even during an economic recession due to coronavirus. Writes about this LinkedIn.

New Jersey и Los Angeles launched websites so people can find work in demand during a pandemic.

CVS Pharmacy stated that it employs 50 people to meet the growing demand in its stores.

Pizza Hut announced plans to recruit 30 full-time employees.

Walmart announced that by the end of May it will employ about 150 temporary workers for its stores, distribution centers and distribution centers.

Dollar Tree, which also owns Family Dollar, plans to hire 25 workers.

7-Eleven wants to attract 20 new employees.

Amazon intends to hire 100 workers.

Domino's employs over 10000 workers.

The medical community is looking for as many medical professionals as possible. New York even asked private and retired health workers to get started. More 1000 people answered the request.

Food chains (including Kroger) are looking for workers, as are shipping companies, online learning companies and telecommuting companies.

According to data released by the Institute of Economic Policy (EPI) on March 24, far more workers have applied for unemployment benefits in the United States from March 16 to 22 than in any other week in the country's history.

“It will go around any other week in history,” writes Aaron Sojourner and Paul Goldsmith-Pinkham of EPI. “The true consequences are undoubtedly larger than those described here.”

The estimate is based on applications filed March 15–21 in 35 states and Washington, DC, and is extrapolated to the remaining 15 states, as the country is still experiencing a rapid increase in coronavirus cases.

“Our model predicts that 3,4 million Americans submitted new applications for unemployment benefits last week, although we believe that this number could be as little as 3 million or, conversely, be significantly higher,” experts warn.

According to the report, only these statistics will increase the unemployment rate by more than half (up to 5,5%), returning to the 2015 level in just one week. For comparison, the largest monthly increase in unemployment in US history was about 1,3 percentage points in October 1949; this week would be 2,2.

And the numbers don't reflect the full reality, as the researchers explained that the actual statistics "could be substantially higher." Not all unemployed people can apply for unemployment benefits either, and those who do receive about half or less of their regular income.

Meanwhile, despite the advice of health experts and government officials, US President Donald Trump continues to argue that the country will be “open for business” as usual from April 12.
