Five Tipped Services
Most of us know that we have to tip bartenders, drivers / couriers who deliver food, hotel employees who help bring our luggage to the room.
But there are other situations where tips are appropriate.
Edition USA Today She turned to expert William Fry, an associate professor at the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Niagara University, with a request to tell you when you can leave a tip.
"If you decide to tip but aren't sure how much, 15% of the service fee is usually a standard amount," says Frye.
Fry suggested several situations where you might not have thought to leave a tip before, but that should have been done.
Roadside service. Consider how long it will take you to change a flat tire. Then imagine how much time you'll save if a tow truck or other roadside assistance does it for you. “Not only do they provide a service, but they also provide a convenience that makes my life a lot easier,” says Frye. A tip of $10 is enough, but you can give more if, for example, it is raining or snowing outside.
Skycaps. These are workers at airports, which are often located near the roadside check-in counter and help you with your luggage. However, they are easily confused with agents, says Fry. “These are people working on behalf of the airline who receive a significant portion of their compensation from remuneration.” Fry offers $ 3-5 for the first suitcase, and then $ 1 for each additional.
Tour guide. If you are visiting a new city, a guide can help you. “If you have a dedicated guide, most people don't think twice about thanking them at the end of the tour,” says Fry, adding that tipping varies depending on how much time you spend with the guide and the quality of the tours. The tip size can vary from a couple of dollars to $10.
Uber / Lyft. Uber doesn't require you to "praise" drivers, while Lyft encourages customers to tip. “Because the sharing economy is still in its infancy, there is a lot of confusion about whether you tip or not,” says Frye. No matter what service you end up getting, it never hurts to offer a few dollars, especially if the driver gets you to your destination quickly.
Hotel houses. Fry says most homeowners get the minimum wage for hard work by cleaning a few hotel rooms daily. "The reward of $ 2-5 will bring you their appreciation."
