Five best US states for the middle class

Representatives of the middle class in the United States earn less money. Since 1999, Americans ’average income has declined in all but two states. At the moment, the middle class in the US experts include families whose income ranges from 35 000 to 100 000 dollars per year.

Therefore, buying a home for most Americans or generating sufficient savings for retirement is becoming increasingly difficult, writes CNBC.

However, some states offer better conditions for the middle class than others.

States on the West Coast are generally more beneficial for the middle class than in the Midwest, South or East Coast.

To determine where life is easier for the middle class, researchers collected data from the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, based on eight key indicators: the percentage of middle-class families; the percentage of families with incomes below the middle class; the number of new jobs for the middle class; job growth for the middle class; property tax and income tax rates; average cost of housing and the level of home ownership.

The researchers evaluated each state for each metric and deduced from this a general assessment. States could get maximum 100 points. The 11 states that showed the best results can be seen in the infographics below.

1. Utah

• Percentage of middle-class households: 49,1
• Percentage of job growth for the middle class: 55
• Income tax rate for the middle class: 19,7

2. Wyoming

• Percentage of middle-class households: 46,2
• Percentage of job growth for the middle class: 59

3. South Dakota

• Percentage of middle-class households: 49,1
• Percentage of job growth for the middle class: 23

4. Idaho

• Percentage of middle-class households: 48
• Percentage of job growth for the middle class: 31
• Income tax rate for the middle class: 19

5. North Dakota

• Percentage of middle-class households: 45,7
• Percentage of job growth for the middle class: 105
• Income tax rate for the middle class: 16

At the same time in the north-east of the United States formed children's conditions for the middle class. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island were among the top five states with the highest tax burden and inaccessible housing.
