Putin announced the introduction of martial law in the occupied territories of Ukraine: what does this mean
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree introducing martial law in four annexed regions - in the self-proclaimed “DPR” and “LPR” and the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. It is not specified for how long martial law will be introduced, reports Radio Liberty.
Speaking via video link at a meeting of the Russian Security Council, Putin said that martial law was in effect in these territories even before they were annexed to Russia. “Now it is necessary to formalize this regime within the framework of Russian legislation,” said the Russian President.
The decree has already been sent for approval to the Federation Council.

According to the decree published on Online Kremlin, martial law will come into force tomorrow, October 20. “Territorial defense” will be created in the annexed regions, a “medium level of response” will be introduced in eight more regions, a “level of increased readiness” will be introduced in the Central and Southern Federal Districts, and a “level of basic readiness” will be introduced in the remaining Russian regions.” If necessary, In the Russian Federation, during the period of martial law, other measures may be applied, provided for by the constitutional law “On Martial Law” of 2002,” the decree notes.

Putin also announced that the heads of Russian regions will be given additional powers to ensure security.
Legal martial law has been in force in these regions since February 24. It was introduced by the Ukrainian authorities after the start of the Russian invasion.
