Putin in New York: Syria and Ukraine are at stake

The flag, by the way, was taken out of Ilovaisk in eastern Ukraine, where he was an unwitting witness to the death of 350 Ukrainian military personnel.

More than two hundred Ukrainian and Belarusian immigrants organized a “warm” welcome to Putin outside the UN building. They went out with posters and demands for Putin immediately get out of Ukraine.

Russians in the field of ignoring Ukraine have also achieved notable success. Ukrainian diplomats are doing everything possible to ensure that the world community does not lose interest in the events of the war in the east and annexed Crimea, but this is a tough battle. But many experts suggest that the states are ready to exchange Ukraine for the change of the Assad regime in Syria and will do it without a backward eye. Americans allies are important in the fight against the Islamic state, which for Americans is much worse than the Ukrainian-Russian conflict.

“Whoever claims that Ukraine will become a bargaining chip in the negotiations on Syria is, basically, the media that originate from Russia. And this is part of the Russian information war against Ukraine and the entire civilized world <...>. If you see the statements of representatives of the White House, representatives of the leaders of European countries, it is clearly stated that the topic of Ukraine is the first priority today, ”Petro Poroshenko said during a meeting with the Ukrainian diaspora.

However, it is unlikely that during his four-day visit to the US, Poroshenko is able to somehow influence the situation. If someone has a chance, it is the diplomats.

Yuriy Sergeev, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, developed his plan: it is necessary to deprive Russia of the opportunity to vote in the Security Council on the Ukrainian issue. And this, seemingly, is real - France already agrees, it remains to persuade Britain and the United States, then the voices of China and Russia - of the two other countries of the veterans - will no longer have any meaning. Then - the second part of the plan: depriving Russia of the right of veto.

“Everyone understands that Russia is an aggressor, moreover, at the first meeting, and at the second it was very clear that Russia is an aggressor, but the decision to recognize Russia as a party to the conflict was never made,” explains the Ukrainian diplomat.

What will Poroshenko bring to New York, what are the required points of the program?
Each element is important - and meeting with the community, and performance in the UN.
It is extremely important for us that the head of state speaks at the Summit of Sustainable Development. It is important that the world know that we are one, we work, despite the conflict in the east.

It is crucial for us to speak in direct political debates, scheduled for 29 [September]. We will talk about our misfortune, we will talk about aggression and the aggressor frankly and specifically, we will call on all civilized society to influence and stop what our neighbor in Ukraine is doing. This will also apply to the credibility of the UN, primarily to the Security Council. Since Russia is undermining the credibility of the Security Council, which should primarily serve the issue of peace and stability, preempt conflicts. And we are dealing with the fact that the country that carries out the aggression is also a permanent member of the Security Council.

President [of Ukraine] will take part in the initiative of [President of the United States] Obama and [Secretary General of the United Nations] Ban Ki-moon on peace, security and peacekeeping operations. Ukraine is a donor of peacekeeping, and for many years, we have our own opinion on how to increase the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations. Of course, we will also talk about the fact that we are awaiting the UN peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine.

What decision of this session of the UN General Assembly will you consider to be a diplomatic victory for Ukraine?
Last year, this was the resolution of the General Assembly on the territorial integrity of Ukraine. This resolution works in the form of non-recognition of the occupation authorities in Crimea in the context of international relations. For example, they are not recognized by the International Maritime Organization, the International Aviation Service. Of course, the maximum will be when the Crimea will be released. But this is obviously a long-term goal.
