Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his child secretly baptized the father of the current head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), Cyril (Gundyaev), Mikhail.

The head of Russia spoke about this in the film “Patriarch,” which was aired on the Rossiya-1 TV channel in honor of Kirill’s 70th birthday.

“When I was baptized - it was at the end of 1952 - my mother told me how it was. I was baptized in secret from my father; he was a member of the CPSU. I don’t know how serious this secret really was, but that’s what they told me, in any case, when I grew up,” Putin began his story.

He noted that he was baptized in Leningrad, in the Transfiguration Cathedral.

“The priest, who was serving there then, suggested that we name her son, that is, me, Mikhail. He said: today is Michael’s day, the day of the angel, and I am Michael. Mom apologized and replied: Father, I’m sorry, we already named him after his father. He said: oh well. Such a kind, calm father,” Putin said

According to him, several years ago he asked Kirill how he “came to church,” and he said that his father was a priest. From a conversation with Kirill, Putin learned that the father of the current primate of the Russian Orthodox Church served in the Transfiguration Cathedral in St. Petersburg in the fifties, and his name was Mikhail.

Putin asked Kirill whether the other Michaels had served in that temple at that time, and it turned out not. From this, Putin concluded that he was secretly baptized by the father of the current patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In honor of the Patriarch’s 70th birthday, which Kirill celebrates on November 20, 2016, Putin awarded him the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, XNUMXst degree.
