Putin threatened the US with new missiles: what weapons does Russia have?

The head of Russia almost directly threatened the American leadership with missiles that are able to fly to Washington and New York. According to him, the United States should first calculate the speed of Russian missiles, and only then make some decisions. Putin was referring to the US withdrawal from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF) and the idea of ​​locating American launchers in Romania and Poland. The President of Russia believes that Washington has defiantly neglected the provisions of this Treaty.

“First, they began to develop and use medium-range missiles, giving them the name of a target missile for missile defense purposes as a diversion. Then they began deploying Mk-41 launchers in Europe, which make it possible to carry out the combat use of Tomahawk medium-range cruise missiles. Having done all this, the United States openly neglected and pointedly ignored the totality of the provisions provided for in Articles 4 and 6 of the INF Treaty,” Putin emphasized.

Therefore, Russia, according to him, is ready for mirror and asymmetric measures in case the United States deploys medium- and shorter-range missiles in Europe. For this purpose, Moscow has “Dagger”, “Peresvet”, “Zircon”, “Avangard”, “Sarmat”, “Burevestnik” and “Poseidon”.

“Russia does not intend to be the first to deploy such missiles in Europe. If they are actually produced and delivered to the European continent, and the United States has such plans, in any case we have not heard statements to the contrary, then this will sharply aggravate the situation in the sphere of international security and create serious threats for Russia, because some classes of these missiles have an airborne time to Moscow can be up to 10-12 minutes. This is a very serious threat to us. In this case, we will be forced, I want to emphasize this, we will be forced to provide for mirror and asymmetric actions,” Putin said.

He stressed that Russia will respond immediately, immediately after the threat against it becomes real, and will aim the weapon not only at the countries where the US places its weapons, but also at the United States itself.

“I will say it directly and openly today, so that no one will reproach us for anything later, so that it will be clear to everyone in advance what we are talking about here. Russia will be forced to create and deploy types of weapons that can be used not only in relation to those territories from which a corresponding direct threat will come to us, but also in relation to those territories where the decision-making centers for the use of missile systems that threaten us are located,” Putin emphasized.

“According to their tactical and technical data, including the flight time to the specified control centers, these weapons will be fully consistent with the threats that will be directed against Russia. We know how to do this, and we will implement these plans immediately as soon as the corresponding threats to us become real,” the Russian President said.

“Let them calculate the range and speed of our promising weapon systems. “We ask only this: let them first count, and only after that make decisions that could create additional serious threats to our country and, of course, lead to retaliatory actions from Russia, whose security will be reliably and unconditionally ensured,” noted head of the Kremlin.

Putin called on the White House to abandon all illusions about gaining global military superiority. However, he noted that Russia is not interested in confrontation with the United States, is not the main threat to them, and Moscow wants to have equal friendly relations with Washington. But now, he said, it’s up to the United States - Moscow will continue to develop its Armed Forces and will no longer “knock on a closed door” for discussions on disarmament.

Hypersonic aircraft-missile complex "Dagger"

As President Putin said, aviation complexes with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles in test combat duty mode confirmed their unique characteristics.

He assured that the work on expanding the infrastructure of the base of the MiG-31 aircraft equipped with these missiles will continue.

In addition, “the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile of unlimited range is being successfully tested.”

Let us recall that the Russian President announced the completion of successful tests of the Kinzhal hypersonic aircraft-missile system during the announcement of his last year’s address.

Since 1 December 2017, this complex, which has no world analogues, has been put on pilot combat duty in the Southern Military District (SOT).

The unique flight performance of a high-speed carrier aircraft allows the missile to be delivered to the discharge point in a matter of minutes, and the rocket itself, flying at a speed exceeding the speed of sound 10 times, maneuvers in all parts of the flight path. This allows the rocket to overcome all existing and future air defense systems and missile defense systems, delivering nuclear and conventional warheads to a target over a distance of more than 2 thousands of kilometers.

Last summer, the Russian Ministry of Defense showed a video of a training launch of the latest hypersonic Kinzhal missiles from the MiG-31 supersonic high-altitude all-weather long-range fighter-interceptor.

Laser installations "Peresvet"

As the President of Russia stated during the announcement of his message to the Federal Assembly, the “Peresvet” laser installations also confirmed their unique characteristics during experimental combat duty.

All Peresvet laser systems, which are in trial operation among the troops, will go on combat duty in December 2019.

For the first time, these weapons should have been shown during the military parade of the Victory in May 2018. However, it was too cumbersome.

Hypersonic missile "Zircon" with a speed of up to Mach 9

The range of this hypersonic missile can reach more than a thousand kilometers. At the same time, it is capable of hitting both sea and land targets. And the US has no means of protection against it.

“Its use is envisaged from sea carriers of serial surface ships and submarines, including those already produced and those being built for the Caliber precision weapon missile systems,” the president explained.

On December 10, 2018, Russia conducted another successful test of the Zircon sea-based hypersonic missile. During them, the rocket reached a maximum speed of Mach 8, that is, eight times the speed of sound, or a speed of about two miles (3,2 km) per second. Since 2015, Russia has conducted five full tests of this hypersonic missile.

In the US, they note that this is a dual-purpose weapon, that is, it can be used both against a target on land and against a ship at sea.

According to foreign sources, serial production of the Zircon is planned to begin in 2021, and this missile could be put into service in 2022. However, sources in Russia claim that Zircon hypersonic missiles may sooner enter service with the Yasen-M nuclear submarines, promising Husky-class submarines, as well as a number of surface ships, including the Pyotr Velikiy and Pyotr Velikiy missile cruisers. Admiral Nakhimov."

Hypersonic weapon "Vanguard"

Work is also continuing on promising models and weapons systems that Vladimir Putin spoke about in his message last year.

“Rhythmically, without failures, according to plan. Serial production of the Avangard complex has begun. This year, as planned, the first regiment of the Strategic Missile Forces will be equipped with it,” the president said. In December 2019, the regiment will receive at least two such complexes, and in 2020 their number will increase to six.

Initially, the carrier of strategic hypersonic weapons will be the UR-100N UTTH missile, later - the newest heavy missile "Sarmat".

The Ministry of Defense demonstrated test flight tests of a missile from the Avangard complex with a hypersonic winged warhead that allows it to bypass the coverage areas of any anti-missile systems in December 2018.

The launch of the rocket was conducted by combat crews from the Dombarovsky position area according to the conventional target at the Kura test site in the Kamchatka region.

During the flight at hypersonic speed, the planning winged unit performed controlled maneuvering and at the appointed time struck a conventional target on the battlefield.

Unprecedented in power intercontinental missile "Sarmat"

During the announcement of his message to the Federal Assembly, Russian President Vladimir Putin recalled that Russia “is conducting a series of tests of the heavy Sarmat intercontinental missile, unprecedented in power.”

The Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile overcomes the resistance of any missile defense system, and there are no restrictions on its range of use, the president previously reported.

Weighing 200 tons, the Sarmat's flight range is higher than that of the Bulava. The number and power of warheads on the Sarmat are much greater.

“The Voyevoda (heavy intercontinental ballistic missile) has a flight range of 11 thousand km, the new system has virtually no range limitations,” Putin said during the announcement of his 2018 Address, demonstrating a computer model of the Sarmat flight.

Putin emphasized that the Sarmat is capable of attacking targets both through the North and South Pole: “This is a very formidable weapon. Due to its characteristics, no missile defense systems, even promising ones, are a hindrance to it.”

Nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile

In his message to the Federal Assembly, Russian President Vladimir Putin also emphasized that the Burevestnik unlimited-range cruise missile with a small-sized nuclear propulsion system is being successfully tested.

The Russian Ministry of Defense published the first footage from successful tests of the 9M730 Burevestnik cruise missile in July 2018.

The description of the video said that it was a low-flying, unobtrusive cruise missile carrying a nuclear warhead with an almost unlimited range, unpredictable flight trajectory and the ability to bypass intercept lines is invulnerable to all existing and future anti-missile defense and air defense systems.

Strategic range system with unmanned underwater vehicle "Poseidon"

According to the Russian President, the military is also successfully testing a multi-purpose strategic range system with the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle.

“In this regard, I want to make one important remark. This was not mentioned earlier, but today we can say: already in the spring of this year the first nuclear submarine - the carrier of this unmanned complex - will be launched. “The work is going according to plan,” Vladimir Putin said.

Last summer, the Russian Ministry of Defense posted a video on its YouTube channel demonstrating this system with an unmanned underwater vehicle that looks like a large torpedo.

Experts emphasize that Poseidon is a fundamentally new type of naval underwater weapon and is based on the use of unmanned underwater vehicles. The main advantage of this system is “almost one hundred percent invulnerability from enemy countermeasures.”

“This will allow the Russian Navy to fight aircraft carrier and ship strike groups of a potential enemy in any direction of the ocean theater of operations, and to hit coastal infrastructure facilities at an intercontinental range,” the Ministry of Defense assured.

The nuclear power plant for Poseidon completed testing in December 2017, and comprehensive experimental testing of the unmanned underwater vehicle was completed in 2018.

The President of Russia also said that in order to protect Russia’s national interests, seven new multi-purpose submarines will be transferred to the Russian Navy two to three years earlier than the deadlines established by the State Armaments Program, and five surface ships of the far sea zone will be laid down in the near future. Another 16 ships of this class will be commissioned into the Navy by 2027.
