Putin warned of a possible war with NATO over Crimea and accused the United States of trying to hinder the development of Russia

The Kremlin fears that if Ukraine joins NATO, Russia will have to fight the Alliance over the annexed Crimea, reports Hromadske.

This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 1 at a press conference following talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Interfax reports.

«Fundamental Russian concerns were ignored. We did not see adequate consideration of our three key requirements,” Putin said.

“It is written in the doctrines of Ukraine itself that they are going to return the Crimea, in particular, by military means. It's not what they say in public, it's written in the documents... Let's imagine that Ukraine is a NATO country and starts these military operations. Should we fight the NATO bloc? Has anyone even thought about this? It seems not,” Putin complains.

He also said that he considers Ukraine an instrument in the hands of the United States, which sets itself the task of “containing the development of Russia.”

Russia is now demanding from NATO never expand east againin particular not to accept Ukraine. The US and the Alliance have already responded with disagreement to such demands.

At the same time, even before the talks, Moscow began to move its troops to the border with Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Defense, there are about 130 thousand Russian militaryincluding military aviation. And in Belarus, military exercises with Russia are scheduled for February, and soldiers are already starting to arrive in the country.

Ukrainian intelligence says that Russia is preparing for a possible attack on the east and south of Ukraine in January-February 2022. American intelligence (in accordance with anticipated scenario, shared by Bloomberg), believe that an attack on Ukraine could happen in three directions: from the occupied Crimea, Belarus and the Russian border.
