Putin granted Russian citizenship to an American to circumvent sanctions
President Vladimir Putin has granted Russian citizenship to Novatek Chief Financial Officer Mark Jetway. This may help an American citizen bypass some sanctions restrictions, writes Reuters.

US sanctions against Russia since 2014 have prohibited Americans and companies from helping to organize long-term financing for some large Russian companies, including Novatek.
The sanctions were imposed after the annexation by Moscow of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and the support of the pro-Russian separatists in the east of Ukraine.

When the US and the EU imposed sanctions on Russia, foreign top managers of the listed companies, including Novatek and VTB, transferred their lending and security issues to their colleagues who did not have European or American passports.
Jetway, who was Novatek's CFO since 2003, admitted back in 2014 that he could no longer help his company raise new long-term financing.

The issue is resolved after the President of Russia signed a decree on granting Russian citizenship on Monday, July 22.
Earlier, Putin granted citizenship to some other Western citizens working in senior positions in Russian companies.
Dzhetvey refused to comment on the decree.
