Pest control company Orkin is now helping travelers make more informed decisions. It provides helpful recommendations through its Bed Bug Registry, a public database that tracks reports of bed bugs in hotels and vacation rentals for travelers across the US and Canada.

The Bed Bug Registry is a free resource built on user reports. It allows you to view data or submit reports of bed bugs at specific hotels. It was originally created to help travelers and renters identify areas with known problems before arrival and reduce the risk of staying in an infested room. While the original registry website is now inactive, a related resource Bed Bug Reports is the most current version of the database and contains the latest reports on bed bugs.

How to use the resource:

• Go to the main page.
• In the drop-down menu, select a state or province (there is a separate search for Canada).
• Enter the name of the hotel (or apartment) in the search field and click Search.
• Review the list of reports: you will see dates, details, and the number of complaints (there is a Latest Reports and Worst Offenders section).

If you find bedbugs yourself, you can submit a report using the form on the website (include the address, date, and description).

The registry doesn't replace official inspections and doesn't guarantee that a particular room is completely free of bedbugs, but it does provide additional information for comparing hotels. Since bedbugs aren't limited to dirty areas and can appear even in expensive, premium hotels, information from the community can be especially helpful.

Before traveling, Orkin recommends not only checking your destination for reports of bed bugs but also packing wisely. Using plastic bags or special luggage covers will prevent bed bugs from "coming home" with you.

Upon arrival at your hotel, take a few minutes to inspect your room before unpacking. Look for typical signs of bed bugs on the mattress, box spring, headboard, and furniture, including blood stains, feces, or live bugs. Store your luggage on the luggage rack, not on the bed or upholstered furniture. If you notice signs of bed bugs, notify the hotel staff immediately and consider moving to a different room or hotel.
