Direct payments to residents with no strings attached: 32 US cities with guaranteed income

The concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) has generated widespread interest in recent years. Income security programs have become more widespread during the pandemic, which hit low-wage workers especially hard and left many Americans poor. Former Stockton, California mayor Michael Tubbs took this idea to the next level with the launch of the Mayors for a Guaranteed Income network. As of this year, 60 mayors are participating in the program, advocating for and launching pilot programs to provide income security for residents. California recently implemented the first statewide guaranteed income program in the United States, which pays up to $1000 a month to pregnant and young adults leaving the foster care system.

The Basic Income Program, which Tubbs launched in Stockton in 2019, has become a model for other cities. Low-income residents receive hundreds of dollars a month in guaranteed income. The impact of the aid on their job prospects, financial stability and general well-being is also assessed. As a result, the participants improved all of these indicators.

Nika Sun-Shiong, co-director of the Compton Pledge Income Guarantee Program in Compton, California, said in November that basic income programs help people who do not normally enroll in Social Security programs.

However, this model is not new. For example, the Casino Dividend, an Eastern Cherokee Indian group in North Carolina, has donated funds annually to tribe members since 1997. Alaska has been paying residents oil dividends since 1982. In the 1970s, Canada experimented with basic income. The general idea of ​​providing people with a universal basic income has been around for hundreds of years.
