Prospect Park in New York has become a fully pedestrian zone.

Starting from 2 in January, Prospect Park in Brooklyn becomes a fully pedestrian zone.

This was announced by the mayor of New York, Bill De Blasio, the press service of the city administration.

This innovation was the result of an experiment that began in the 2017 year, when periods or hours without cars were set up in the park, which received wide support from city residents.

“Prospect Park holds a special place in my family's history. Chirlane and I got married there and then enjoyed spending time there with our children. Today we're giving New Yorkers a great New Year's gift, recognizing the special place the park holds in the lives of so many other Brooklyn families. Now, as a safe, car-free destination, the park can attract even more people who enjoy running, walking or biking while enjoying nature,” De Blasio said.

Prospect Park exists in New York for more than 150 years, city officials are hoping that turning it into a pedestrian zone will make this place cleaner and safer.

Until today, 2 January, East drive Prospect Park was open to traffic on weekdays from 7: 00 to 9: 00 (in the morning rush hour).

In the summer of 2017, the city authorities tried to close the traffic through the park. This decision led to an increase in the number of visitors to the park, activists of the city began collecting signatures for turning the park into a fully pedestrian zone, receiving 1100 signatures from New Yorkers.

During the experiment, the city authorities also found that the overlapping of the park does not lead to a strong increase in traffic on other routes, after which it was decided to turn Prospect Park into a fully pedestrian zone.
