Asylum seekers from Russia are not allowed to enter the United States from Mexico

Immigrant rights advocates report that despite US commitments to take in people fleeing Ukraine, asylum seekers from Russia, including those who oppose the Putin regime, are now finding it harder to get inside. The Hill.

In recent months, there has been a sharp increase in the number of Ukrainian and Russian migrants seeking to enter the United States from Mexico. Entering through Mexico is a common route because, unlike the US, Mexico does not require a visa for Russian citizens.

Along with refugees from Ukraine, Russians who have faced persecution in Russia are seeking asylum in the United States. Immigration lawyers say that since mid-March, authorities began an unofficial program at the border to provide asylum to Ukrainians, but not Russians.

On March 18, 34 Russian citizens hoped to cross the border at the port of entry of San Ysidro between Tijuana and San Diego, but they failed to do so.

“They looked at our paperwork and said they weren't telling us no, but they said we should wait. This was the answer, so we are waiting,” said refugee from Russia Irina Zolkina.

Officials say Russians are seeking asylum for a variety of reasons: disagreeing with the Putin regime, discrimination based on sexual orientation or Muslim faith, extortion and terrorizing small business owners in Russia.
