Grocery store in Connecticut charged 20 times for the same purchase: the woman lost thousands of dollars

Local shoppers who went grocery shopping on May 21 were shocked to learn they were charged thousands of dollars in purchases due to the glitch. How it happened and what the company did, the publication told Cincinnati.

Taylor Graham of Milford, Connecticut, said she ordered groceries for pickup from Meijer and spent $139,48.

Moments later, she received a notification in her banking app that $139,48 was being debited from her card over and over again. The debit amount quickly reached $1000.

“I was panicked and depressed. We just had a baby so our bank account was already empty due to medical expenses. Money is tight right now,” Graham complained.

She called Meijer in Milford and spoke to a manager, who explained that there had been a glitch with their data partner, so some customers who paid by card were being charged multiple times for a single purchase.

The manager assured her that the payments would be returned by the next morning.

Graham set her alarm for 07:00 and, as soon as she woke up, checked her banking application. Numerous payments from her card not only did not stop, but there were new additional payments.

By Tuesday, May 24, Graham had been charged 20 times for a single purchase, totaling $2789.

“Many people said they were charged three or four times. And another girl wrote to me that her account was down to zero, Graham wondered. “I told her that I understand the situation, because my bill due date is approaching, but there is no money.”

A Meijer spokesperson said that he encountered problems processing some transactions.

“Last weekend we were having trouble processing credit/debit cards due to a technical issue with our processing partner, Chase Bank. Although the issue has been resolved, we understand that it has caused great inconvenience to some of our customers and we offer our sincere apologies. We have been assured by Chase Bank that many customer funds have already been returned and any remaining affected customers should receive their funds in the coming days,” the statement said.

As of May 25, Graham has still not received a refund. After long hours on the phone trying to get answers, the client was finally told that the refund would be credited to her account, but this could take up to 10 days.

“It's just really hard. I don't know what to do at the moment. You just have to wait and hope,” concluded Graham.

Meijer advised customers to check their bank accounts for repeated charges if they made purchases. The company asked them to be patient until the issue is resolved.
