'Mistook for a seal': in Maine, a shark killed a woman

On Monday, July 27, off the coast of Maine, a shark attacked and killed a woman. Writes about it New York Post.

The woman swam off the coast of Bailey Island. At about 15:30 pm, a witness saw that she was attacked by something that looked like a shark, the Maine Maritime Patrol said.

A couple of kayakers helped her get to shore, and the medics who arrived at the scene provided further assistance, but was declared dead at the scene, according to patrol officials.

The name of the victim has not yet been released, as the woman's family has not yet been notified of the incident.

The incident was only the second recorded unprovoked shark attack in the state.

“Shark-human interactions are very rare in Maine,” said New England shark specialist James Sulikowski. “I'm guessing the shark mistook the woman for food.”

Sulikowski, who is doing research at Arizona State University, says he is pretty sure the big fish that attacked the victim was a great white shark. They can reach lengths over 15 feet (4,5 m).

Several large predators of this species have been seen off the coast of Maine in recent years, he said.

Sulikowski said that on Sunday, July 26, the same shark attacked a seal in Phippsburg, Maine, before heading south of the state.

The Maritime Patrol urged swimmers and boaters to be careful, and Sulikowski also warned people not to walk around the seals.

“It’s easy to mistake us for a seal, but it’s a shark’s lunch,” he said.
