'I will accept any consequences': Will Smith left the US Film Academy after a fight at the Oscars

After Will Smith punched host Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, he announced that he was retiring from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Writes about it CNN.

"I am resigning my membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate," Smith said.

Smith's statement was: "Change takes time and I am determined to put in the work to never again let violence take over the mind."

Following an embarrassing episode at the March 27 Oscars, the Academy announced that it had "initiated disciplinary proceedings" against Smith.

David Rubin, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, stated that the organization had received and accepted Smith's "immediate resignation".

"We will continue our disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violating the Academy's Standards of Conduct ahead of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18," Rubin said.

Disciplinary action by the Academy includes suspension or expulsion, as well as "other sanctions permitted by the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct," the organization said in a statement.

Instead, Smith voluntarily left the famous organization of movie stars, directors and producers. With his resignation, he will no longer be able to vote annually for Oscar-nominated films. However, he himself will still be eligible for consideration and a nomination for an Oscar in the future.

His statement read: “I have responded to the Academy's notice of disciplinary hearing and will fully accept any and all consequences of my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have offended is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone present and a worldwide audience. I betrayed the Academy's trust. I have deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be recognized for their outstanding work. I'm heartbroken. I want to once again focus on those who deserve credit for their accomplishments and let the Academy get back to the incredible work they are doing to support creativity and artistry in film. And so, I am resigning from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences that the Board deems appropriate. Change takes time, and I am committed to working on myself to ensure that I never let violence get the better of my mind."

He originally apologized to the Academy during his televised Best Actor awards speech about forty minutes after the incident. But in that speech, he didn't apologize to Rock.

The next day, Smith publicly apologized to The Rock on social media.

But in the latest statement, he was far more critical of himself, calling his actions "shocking, painful and unforgivable."
