President of Ukraine signed a law on the termination of friendship with Russia

President Petro Poroshenko signed the law of Ukraine “On the termination of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation,” writes Correspondent. About this on Monday, December 10, the press service of the head of state.

According to Poroshenko, the non-renewal of the treaty with Russia should be viewed not as an episode, but “as part of our strategy for a final break with the colonial past and reorientation towards Europe.”

“Other components of this strategy: visa-free travel, the Association Agreement with the EU, the Tomos on the creation of an autocephalous independent Ukrainian church, withdrawal from the CIS, the policy of joining NATO and the European Union enshrined in the Constitution, the creation of a powerful, patriotic and professional Ukrainian army, support for the Ukrainian language , our own history and the strengthening of our national identity,” Poroshenko noted.

The head of state also said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine requires the completion of an inventory of the legal framework with Russia.

Poroshenko also noted that this agreement was not terminated earlier in order to use its position as a basis for our numerous claims in international courts. In particular, the president cited certain provisions of this agreement, which states that the parties “build relations with each other on the basis of the principles of mutual respect..., territorial integrity, inviolability of borders..., non-use of force, non-interference in internal affairs..., conscientious fulfillment of undertaken international obligations... , norms of international law...".

Recall that the December 6 Verkhovna Rada approved the termination of the friendship treaty with the Russian Federation. The People’s Deputies decided to terminate the agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and Russia from 1 on April 2019.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin said that Ukraine would not sever diplomatic relations with Russia in connection with the attack of the Russian military on Ukrainian ships near the Kerch Strait. According to him, about 40 bilateral agreements with the Russian Federation will be terminated in the near future.
