The President of Azerbaijan called the “return” of the capital of Armenia his goal

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that residents of his country should strive to “return to historic lands”, among which he mentioned the capital of Armenia, Yerevan.

He made this statement during a speech at the ruling party's congress. the country "Yeni Azerbaijan", where Aliyev was once again nominated a presidential candidate, writes RBC.

“I want to note that we should not forget about our historical lands. In the future, this should be one of our activities. Our historical lands - Irevan khanate, Zengezur (Syunik region of Armenia), Geyche (Lake Sevan in Armenia), our young generation and the whole world should know about it, ”said Aliyev

It is not the first time when the President of Azerbaijan speaks of the need to “return Yerevan”. In July 2017, he said that Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia are "historical Azerbaijani lands."

“Not only Nagorno-Karabakh, but also the present territory of Armenia are historical Azerbaijani lands. Today it is impossible to compare weak Armenia with strong Azerbaijan, ”Aliyev said then.

In December 2015, the head of Azerbaijan stated that "the Azerbaijanis intend to return to Yerevan by peaceful means." He explained this by the fact that the residents of Armenia, due to the difficult economic conditions, are leaving the country, and the population of Azerbaijan is increasing.

Vice-Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov called Aliyev’s statement “illiterate, stupid, senseless and ridiculous.”

According to him, “it is unacceptable when in the XXI century the president of one country expresses territorial claims against the neighboring country”.
