Asylum seekers can leave at the border: USCIS introduces new rules
The newly appointed head of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) actively took up changes to the work of the agency.
USCIS Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli on Tuesday, 18 June, sent an email to the staff. In it, he instructed staff to stop some attempts at asylum during initial checks at checkpoints at the US border.
“Asylum Officers, you have sworn an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. Your role as an asylum officer as a public servant requires you to apply the law faithfully, Cuccinelli writes. “USCIS must therefore, to the fullest extent of the law, ensure that we adequately vet individuals who claim fear but nevertheless lack compelling evidence to qualify for asylum or another form of protection available under the law of our land.”

Cuccinelli reminded the officers that they are empowered to fight "frivolous" asylum claims.
This letter drew criticism, including from the head of the union representing asylum officials. He suggested that Cucinelli put excessive pressure on staff to reduce the number of satisfied asylum applications.
"Blaming workers for the results as if we were doing it carelessly is wrong," Michael Knowles, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, told CNN.
“I consider this a threat,” said former USCIS chief counsel Ur Jaddu.
“There is a threat that their new boss will blame asylum officers for the repeated failures of the Trump administration,” he added.
Last week, the office of Cuccinelli issued a press release stating that those who sponsor legal immigrants in the United States will respond “For every dollar” if these immigrants end up applying for state aid instead of earning a living and paying taxes.

“The president has made it a priority to ensure that everyone who seeks to come to the United States is self-sufficient, temporarily or permanently,” said Cuccinelli in a statement addressed to the agency’s staff.
The statement also says that an immigrant must “rely on their own capabilities and resources of their families, their sponsors and private organizations, and not on public resources.”
This is Ken Cuccinelli's first major public move, which is June 10 Was assigned Acting Director of UCSIS.
It is also one of the most bold steps of the agency, which has traditionally received less attention than the border patrol or deportation officers, but which nevertheless occupies a central place in Donald Trump's immigration plans.
