Despite a difficult childhood, a high school student entered Harvard and received a full scholarship
Classmates constantly teased Richard Jenkins with "Harvard" because he often raised his hand in class. In the sixth grade, he found himself on the street, but this stimulated him even more to succeed in life.
Despite his difficult childhood, a high school student from Philadelphia entered Harvard University, where he received a full scholarship.
18-year-old Jenkins faced many difficulties, including poverty, health problems and harassment from classmates. However, he turned these obstacles into motivation in order to build a better future for himself and his family.
Он и его младшие братья были бездомными в течение двух лет — после того, как их мать лишилась своего дома из-за потери прав выкупа. Семье пришлось переехать в штат Теннесси, затем во Флориду, а потом опять вернуться в Филадельцию.
He still remembers how he lived in a homeless shelter in the sixth grade, and realized that knowledge is the way out of his situation.
Although Jenkins’s studies were easy, he began to study even harder to get good grades.
The guy excelled in his studies and showed great interest in technology. Despite a strong migraine, due to which he often ended up in the hospital during his first year of study, Jenkins remained the leader in the classroom.
His mother, Kiana McLaughlin, told CNN that she liked the extracurricular activities that were held at the school.
At boarding school for gifted single-parent students, Jenkins joined the trial program. Makers Space Clubwhere children could bring their ideas to life.
«Он очень креативный, и ему нравится брать на себя инициативу, чтобы что-то сделать», — сказал Хе Кён Ким, технический координатор школы, у которого в прошлой осени учился Дженкинс.
When it was time for college applications, Jenkins decided to try Harvard and other Ivy League schools.
And although he was denied at Yale, he was accepted at Harvard and also offered a full scholarship.
Jenkins plans to study computer science, with particular interest in artificial intelligence. He is also looking forward to learning Japanese and teaching Kendo, martial art with bamboo swords, because he has always been fascinated by Japanese culture.
His godfather, Donald Kinsey, Jr., created GoFundMe, to help Jenkins buy a few things for college, such as new clothes and a tablet computer.
Jenkins advises other children who find themselves in a difficult situation, not to stop dreaming and go to success.
