An Orthodox church in New York could have been set on fire deliberately.

Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in the center of Manhattan, which was completely burned on Easter Day, could have been set on fire deliberately.

Contrary to the statements of the police, who without any suspicion found anything suspicious, members of the Orthodox community in New York believe that such actions could have been a coordinated attack.

The reason is the scandal with the possible canonization of the Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac, against which the Serbs object. They accuse the former archbishop of Zagreb that during the years of the Second World War Stepinats, as they believe in Serbia, took the side of the fascist Croatian government of the Ustashes and did not take any measures to prevent the genocide of the Orthodox Serb population in Croatia.

Pope Francis, who met earlier with the leaders of both countries, last week decided to postpone canonization.

“Too many churches burned down for this to be considered a random incident,” says former Serbian ambassador to the United States Dusan Batakovich.

As reported, on May 1, two Orthodox churches in Australia also burned down - the Macedonian Church of the Resurrection in Sydney and the Greek Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Melbourne.

In addition, on the day of Easter on Valaam in Russia, the Winter Hotel, which is a pilgrimage center, burned. The building, which has belonged to the Valaam Monastery since 2006, is the same age as the Serbian fire-damaged cathedral in New York.

“It is very strange that all the fires occurred on Easter, the greatest holiday for all Orthodox Christians. The possibility of a terrorist attack cannot be ruled out,” says ex-ambassador Dusan Batakovich.
