Right to death: Euthanasia Act enters into force in New Jersey

In New Jersey, a law that would allow terminally ill patients to end their life legally will take effect on Thursday, August 1.

Democratic Governor Phil Murphy signed the 12 bill in April after an Assembly headed by Democrats and the Senate voted in favor of the bill, writes Fox News.

“Allowing residents with terminal illnesses to make choices is what is needed,” Murphy said in press release from 12 April after signing the bill.

Supporters are hailing the law's passage as a victory in the so-called "Right to Die" movement. Opponents say the decision fails to protect society's most vulnerable members and want the state to do more to improve its health care system.

In order to be eligible for euthanasia, a patient aged 18 must go through two waiting periods, submit one written and two oral requests for lethal medications and get a conclusion from two doctors that he really needs a lethal dose of medication (i.e. that his illness is fatal and incurable).

Physicians should also examine patients for conditions that may impair their sanity, including a variety of mental disorders, including depression.

The bill defines a "deadly disease" as one that is incurable and, according to doctors, will end in death within six months. The document also provides for criminal liability for attempting to force someone to request euthanasia.

Earlier, euthanasia legalized Maine, put eighth in the United States.
