How to get help paying for utility bills in the US
The United States has a federal program of financial assistance to low-income families with utility bills.
The service is called Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
The program provides federal financial assistance in covering the costs associated with electricity bills, as well as minor repairs to the house due to weather conditions, as well as repairs to air conditioners and home heating equipment. In addition, due to the abnormally cold weather in January, 2018, some cities and states offered low-income residents to help with paying heating bills, which can be huge due to severe frosts.
LIHEAP does not pay all utility bills, assistance extends only for a certain period, depending on weather conditions and the capabilities of each individual family. The minimum income and terms of assistance each state determines at its discretion.
