California Fires Weaken by Weather
The weather in California seems to have sided with firefighters fighting deadly fire in the state.
The region has become cooler, the wind has died down, and next week, weather forecasters predict rain, writes USA Today.
Improved weather conditions have helped to curb the spread of fire that has already destroyed the city of Paradise and several thousand homes in the region. The fire began on November 8 and took more than 50 lives in a week, becoming the deadliest fire in California history.
However, the absence of wind, the slow progress of fire, has another problem. Ashes and smoke led to very poor air quality in the region, and now they are hanging over cities and hardly moving.
Currently, the flames cover 140 000 acres (57 thousand hectares). The fire killed at least 59 people, 130 people were missing; burned out near 9 000 homes and industrial plants.
About 52 000 people were forced to leave their homes and evacuate; 1 385 people are still in shelters.
Calm winds slowed the progress of fire, but dry and warm weather is projected to continue early next week. On the evening of Saturday or Sunday morning, the winds will increase again, which will once again increase the danger of a raging fire.
But there's a good chance of rain across much of the state in the second half of next week - rain that will help douse the fire.
But meteorologists warn that this does not mean that the high-risk season of California fires is over. After Thanksgiving Day, dry and hot weather with strong winds is again possible in the region, which may lead to new fires.
Officials fear that the death toll will increase after the victims return to their homes after the evacuation, and rescuers may find new bodies in the fire-affected areas.
Northern California suffered the most from fire, and a fire rages in Southern California, which has destroyed hundreds of homes and killed at least three people.
