Fire on a ship with tourists off the coast of the United States: an eyewitness told how he saved 5 crew members

Bob Hansen and his wife decided to go fishing and became unwitting witnesses of a fire on a boat near the shores of Santa Cruz Island. In addition, they managed to save 5 crew members who sailed to their boat. This is stated in the video CNN.

“About 3:30 we heard someone knocking on the side of the boat. I got up and went to check, there were 5 people there and they were asking for help. I saw that right behind them there was a boat all engulfed in flames,” says Hansen.

According to him, the boat was in close proximity to his ship, no further than 400 yards (about 360 m).

The crew members who found their salvation on Hansen’s boat, he said, were in shock, cried, and some of them were seriously injured while fleeing the fire.

“They were in shock, some of them were crying, one had a broken leg so he was in pain, another twisted his ankle. When we brought them on board, they were wet, mostly in their underwear, because they jumped into the water practically from their bed,” Hansen recalls.

He and his wife assisted the victims.

“When I first saw the boat, it was on fire - from bow to stern. There was absolutely nothing I could do to help. There was nothing I could do,” Hansen said, adding that it was a feeling of “absolute helplessness.”

According to the latest data, 34 people were victims of the fire, all of them were declared dead, although only 25 victims were found, writes Buzz Feed News.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said that with the exception of five crew members who managed to escape, divers and rescuers did not find other survivors.

“We extend our sincere thanks and condolences to all of the families of the victims who are having to endure this horrific process while we work to find their loved ones,” Brown said.
