Descendants of immigrants from Ukraine became governors of two states in the USA

At the last US mid-term elections in 6 in November, residents of two US states elected candidates with Ukrainian roots as their governors.

According to the results of the voting, representatives of the Democratic Party 53-year-old Jay Robert Pritzker and 43-year-old Jared Polis will lead the states of Illinois and Colorado respectively, writes “Voice of America".

By the way, they are united by the fact that both of them are also representatives of the Jewish community, as well as successful entrepreneurs.

Polis is the first openly LGBT person to serve as governor. He is the third generation of immigrants to arrive in the United States from Poland and Ukraine in the early 20th century.

“Having been so close to the immigrant experience, I will strongly defend the rights of immigrants and refugees, of course, taking into account the Jewish experience before World War II, when not many countries were willing to accept Jewish refugees,” he told reporters.

Polis has been a member of the Democratic Party since 2009 and also represents his state in Congress. Before being elected to Parliament, Polis was an entrepreneur who founded BlueMountain.com and ProFlowers. He and his partner have two children, which also means Polis is the first LGBT father in the US Congress.

Pritzker also comes from a family of Ukrainian immigrants.

“I come from a family of Ukrainian Jews and am proud to work with the local community of Holocaust survivors,” Pritzker writes on his official website.

He is one of the 11 billionaires in his family, who is in the top 15 richest US families. The general condition of the Pritsker clan is estimated at 33,5 billion dollars.

Grandfather of the election winner Nikolay Yakovlevich Pritsker emigrated to Chicago from Kiev in 1881 year.
