'Lost a lot of blood': in Florida, a shark bit a 16-year-old girl near the shore

A 16-year-old American woman survived being attacked by a small shark while boogie boarding - swimming on her stomach on a surfboard - offshore on a Florida beach.

Jackie Jozaytis said that on the morning of July 12 she was knee-high in the water off the coast of Amelia Island, when a shark animal attacked her, writes New York Post.

“I felt the jaws close on my leg,” the girl said. “I got scared, pulled my leg out of the water and tried to figure out what it was.”

“And when I got to the shore, I saw an open wound on my leg,” she added, pointing to the back of her left leg.

Fortunately, Jackie's girlfriend had just finished medical courses and knew what to do. The resort staff, where she stopped to celebrate her friend's birthday, also rushed to the rescue.

“She grabbed a towel and wrapped it around my leg and lifted it up,” Jackie said.

The girl added that there was a lot of blood - traces remained “in the sand, on the side of the pool,” which was located next to the beach.

In the ambulance, Jackie, with a smile, posed with the medical staff, adding that she felt "a little crazy because she had lost so much blood."

“I told everyone, I’ll be fine! I can cross that incident off my list of things to try,” she recalls with a smile.

Doctors told her that a black-footed or sandy shark ranging in size from 3 to 4 feet (90-120 cm) probably bit her on the foot and heel. Just a centimeter from the wound is the Achilles tendon, the damage of which could have much more serious consequences.

The mother of the victim, Robin Josaytis, was 300 miles (482 km) from the scene. She was amazed to find out what happened.

“The chances of this happening are minimal. This is all very surprising,” she told the press.

Jackie is expected to fully recover. In the meantime, friends are having fun by giving her a “Jaws” T-shirt, plush sharks and a new boogie board with the inscription “It's nice to you”.
