The US Embassy returned to Kyiv: the date was chosen symbolic

A group of American diplomats returned to the US embassy in Kyiv for the first time in almost three months on May 8, having traveled to the Ukrainian capital the day before the celebration of Victory Day in Russia, reports CBS.

“We just arrived in Kyiv! Glad to be back on Victory in Europe Day. Glory to Ukraine! We #standwithUkraine,” US Chargé d’Affaires Christina Quinn wrote on the embassy’s Twitter account. The United States and the West mark the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, while Russia and many former Soviet republics recognize May 9 as the end of the war.

The return of U.S. diplomats to the embassy was meant to highlight Russian President Vladimir Putin's failure to capture the Ukrainian capital at the start of a conflict that has now turned into a debilitating war of attrition in the country's south and east. State Department sources said the embassy hopes to fully reopen in Kyiv and raise the American flag there in the coming weeks.

The move is part of a US effort to counter Russian propaganda around the conflict.

“The Russians will do everything they can to use this date for their own propaganda purposes,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters. “I'm very confident that in the lead-up to May 9, you'll be hearing more from the United States, from our partners, including our NATO partners.”

Putin falsely claims that the invasion of Ukraine — what he has called an ongoing “special military operation” — is an attempt to remove the Nazis from power there.

The Biden administration withdrew American diplomats from Kyiv on February 12 to avoid the risk of potential casualties.

American diplomats were first evacuated to Lvov, closer to the border with NATO ally Poland, ahead of the February 24 Russian invasion, and then removed from the country as the war intensified. Embassy staff began making day trips to Lviv early last week to be able to work with their Ukrainian counterparts from there. Russian troops retreated from Kyiv and the surrounding area in early April.

On May 8, President Biden joined a teleconference with GXNUMX leaders, which was attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The U.S. announced new sanctions against Russia, and the G-XNUMX countries committed to "gradually weaning our dependence on Russian energy, including by halting or banning Russian oil imports," the countries said in a joint statement.
