US Embassy Denied Interview on American Visa for Russian Athletes

According to her, the US embassy in Moscow refused to organize interviews for obtaining US visas by the Russian freestyle wrestling team. She was supposed to participate in the World Cup from 5 to 9 in April in the city of Iowa City. “Despite the note we sent on this occasion at the end of February, the Americans, reaching up to the last moment, only now answered us with a reply, in which they once again refer to the fact that, they say, the lack of consular staff is to blame,” document.

Zakharova further recalled that the decision on which embassy staff to reduce “in the framework of introducing parity in the number of employees of foreign institutions of the two countries” was made by the United States itself. Zakharova further stated that the Russian side regards the non-issuance of visas as “another clear example of preventing the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions”.

In addition, she accused the United States of gross violation of obligations as a state that accepts international competitions.

The events are unfolding against the background of new diplomatic measures that have been taken against Russia against the background of the situation with the poisoning in the UK of a former employee of the GRU, who worked for British intelligence, Sergey Skripal and his daughter Yulia. London, accusing Russia of being involved in this poisoning, expelled a Russian diplomat from 23. Moscow responded by taking similar measures, also sending a British diplomat out of the 23 country. A number of other European countries, as well as the USA, decided to follow the example of London and also declared the expulsion of Russian diplomats from their countries.

Mutual expulsion of Russian and American diplomats was undertaken earlier. The administration of Barack Obama at the end of 2016 of the year, at the end of his term, accusing Moscow of interfering in the US elections, sent 35 Russian diplomats.
