Visitors to the Grand Canyon are asked not to leave locks there as a sign of love: it harms nature

“Love is strong, but our bolt cutters are stronger,” reads a new Facebook post from Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park. Park management has expressed concern about the so-called love locks. They are hung on a metal fence, often with the couple's last name or initials, and the key is then thrown into the nearest body of water. How this can interfere with the park, the publication explained CNN.

Many believe that such locks bring good luck in relationships, and throwing away the key symbolizes inseparable love.

However, if the locks themselves are considered "garbage" in the park, then the keys can cause even more serious problems.

Endangered California condors are attracted to shiny things, which is why some birds swallow keys and then require surgery to remove them.

“Condors are curious creatures and, like a small child, will explore strange objects with their beaks that come their way,” the report said. “Condors can’t digest metal, but they often can’t get past things like this.” If this bird swallows too many of them, it may die.”

Love locks have caused problems in other places, notably on Paris's Pont des Arts bridge, where they have become so heavy that they have compromised the structural integrity of the structure.

When the city of Paris removed all the love locks in 2015, the weight of 700 metal objects was equivalent to the weight of 000 elephants.
