You can get a work permit and a social security number at the same time

Based on the new information sharing partnership between the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA), foreign nationals residing in the US can now apply for a work permit and social security number using a single form.

This is an updated form of I-765 (application for a work permit), the press service of the department said.

In order to work legally in the United States, some categories of foreigners need both a work permit (EAD) from USCIS and the Social Security Number (SSN) from the SSA. Previously, applicants had to file I-765 with USCIS for EAD, and then provide additional documentation in person to their local social welfare office for an SSN.

The new I-765 form includes additional questions that allow applicants to apply for SSN without visiting the social welfare office.

Starting in October 2, USCIS will submit additional data collected on this form to SSA for processing, and applicants who will be approved for EAD by USCIS will also receive a social security card from SSA over the next two weeks.

An EAD is a document that certifies an individual's right to work in the United States for a specified period of time. SSNs are used to inform the government about a worker's wages and to determine the employee's certain benefits if he or she is eligible for them.
