Police warned of a new form of telephone fraud in the US
Several state police warned Americans about a common form of telephone fraud, in which the caller tries to get the victim to say just one word “Yes!”, Which they then give out for the client’s consent to certain paid services or purchases, and withdraw money from the cards, writes New York Post.
Militiamen warn that very often to get the answer “Yes” the question “Do you hear me?” Is used, and they advise Americans not to answer this question in any way if the call was from an unknown number.
The police said that the most correct in such a situation to hang up, although many consider it impolite.
Fraudsters appear to be employees of cruise companies, security agencies or social services.
To get the answer “Yes!” questions were used: “Are you the mistress of the house?”; “Do you pay your phone bills?”; or “Are you a homeowner?”, but most often it was a question: “Can you hear me?”
In most cases, fraudsters call from a number with a local code, which to a certain extent has a relaxing effect on the victims and makes them more trustworthy.
Having received the affirmative answer they need, the fraudsters alter the recording of the conversation and withdraw money from the victim’s previously obtained or stolen data of the victim’s cards or from her phone bill. If the victim begins to complain, she is threatened with a court and the presence of a record with her consent to purchase a product or service.
Therefore, in most cases, the victims did not even go to the police, because they were scared and thought that they themselves were to blame, that they were not attentive enough.
