New York police in a panic: wearable cameras explode right on the chest

According to police, NYPD is shooting all the cameras of the new model, which were worn by almost 3000 officers - after one of the devices exploded on Saturday night due to a faulty battery.

The officer arrived at the 121 station on Staten Island on 11: 30 after duty. The body camera, which worked from midnight until 8 in the morning, first began to smoke and then catch fire, a police source said.

“He took it off his uniform and it caught fire,” the source said. “There is a video of this.”

“The incident indicated that the battery inside the camera had caught fire,” the NYPD said. “The cause and extent of the defect are currently being investigated.”

The officer was not injured.

“This is a technical glitch,” the source said.

The police in the 121 district are frightened by the incident.

According to the police, the police department instructed the 2990 body cameras for each officer. All law enforcement officers wore a LE-5 model, but after the incident with the fire, they were forbidden to use and store them in their cabinets.

Instead, cameras should be placed at the docking station at police stations.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the use and distribution of LE-5 cameras to cease immediately,” the NYPD said.

“We are working closely with the NYPD to investigate this matter,” said Sydney Zigmet, a spokeswoman for Axon, which owns Vievu. “The officer was not injured, but officer safety is of the utmost importance to Axon.” We will do whatever is necessary to resolve this situation quickly and safely.”

The specific LE-5 model is used by 15 sections, two transit areas, one public housing office and a police academy, the department reported.

Around 1300 officers on evening shifts in 20 sites throughout the city have wearable cameras. It is expected that all policemen will be equipped with them by the end of 2018.
