Irish police lost a secret document on the protection of Biden: it was found by a passerby

On April 12, ahead of Joe Biden's speech in Northern Ireland, local police lost a document detailing sensitive security information related to the US President's visit. USAToday.

The document is believed to have been found by a local resident on a street in Belfast, a U.S. law enforcement official said, confirming the authenticity of the document on condition of anonymity.

The document contained the names of Belfast police officers and positions, but nothing about the activities of the Secret Service, which looks after the president's security when traveling abroad, or its security plans.

The security breach came as the terrorist threat in Northern Ireland was considered "serious" due to Biden's visit to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement (Good Friday Agreement), which ended three decades of civil war in Northern Ireland.

Much of Belfast's city center has been sealed off to protect residents of a city with a long history of violence. Despite the violation, the US Secret Service has expressed continued confidence in local authorities.

“The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has advised the Secret Service of media reports of a potentially sensitive document which may contain law enforcement material,” the agency said in a statement. “While we do not discuss the specifics of any defensive operation, these reports did not impact the President's movements.”

Jocelyn Keveney, the Secret Service special agent in charge of the Paris field office who oversees Biden's visit, called the PSNI a "committed partner" in the security effort.

“The Secret Service relies on partnerships to provide the highest level of protection for the world's highest-ranking individuals,” Keaveney said. “We remain grateful for their continued support during the President’s visit.”

The PSNI described the local security operation as the largest in a decade, with some 3000 officers involved.

“The scale of this operation was enormous,” Assistant Chief Constable Chris Todd said. “Extensive planning and preparations have been made to ensure the security of the US President, his officials and staff, as well as Prime Minister Sunak and other senior officials.”

The Secret Service has faced its share of security challenges under the Biden administration. She successfully handled a surprise presidential visit to Ukraine in February on the eve of the anniversary of the Russian invasion.
