Wyoming police set up cameras to catch a mountain lion: what they filmed scared the locals

The authorities in a small town in Wyoming thought that a mountain lion might be walking around the city, so they installed security cameras in the hope of finding it. In return, they received unexpected shots. What happened told the publication Yahoo!.

Two or three weeks later, the Evansville Police Department posted surveillance photos on Facebook. Among the photographs of turkeys, raccoons, skunks, domestic cats, deer... and an unrecognizable, monstrous humanoid, there was no sign of a mountain lion.

“Here are some photos of what's running around in the wilds of Evansville along the river,” the May 8 post said. “If you know someone who is afraid of the dark, please pass this on to them so they can see that there is nothing to be afraid of.”

Some in the comments noted that the photos really scared them. Some suspected that a real alien was roaming the city.

Others seem to have immediately realized that this was a prank.

“Even the creatures of the night love to wear polo clothes,” someone remarked.

“Brilliant prank,” wrote someone else.

"That's the whole cast of Bambi...and a couple of new characters too," someone joked.

Some suggested that the police were very lucky to film him.

“I wonder if any of the police knew he was there, one could only hope for such a miracle,” someone wrote.

“The officer must be having fun,” someone else suggested.

Department officials said "all the officers who worked that night were there, to our surprise, when we pulled out the camera this morning."

As it turned out, it was the chief of police. Mike Thompson confirmed that it was him.

He figured he would get a head start in the "friendly competition" the department has with the neighboring city of Barnum every Halloween when the department organizes a haunted hay maze at the city's firehouse.

“I picked up my mask for Halloween and thought it would be fun,” he said. “I’m a bit of a joker.”

The police department set up the cameras when the Public Works Department found dead deer and other animals in a part of town where they would not normally be found. According to him, they were distinctly similar to those killed by a mountain lion.

The officers then noticed a print in the mud that looked like a mountain lion's paw, so they set up a camera there to "make sure there wasn't a big predator in town."

Recently, a mountain lion was spotted in the nearby town of Casper. The city has lost sight of him, he said, and officials suspect he has returned to Mount Casper.

Evansville will be celebrating its 100th anniversary at the end of the month, so officials wanted to make sure "there won't be wild big kittens running around by then," Thompson said.
