Poland to require all men to undergo military training and wants nuclear weapons
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk plans to require all men to undergo military training. This measure, among others, is aimed at securing the country in the face of the growing threat of Russian aggression, writes Air force.
Tusk announced the innovations in the Polish parliament.
"By the end of this year, we will try to prepare a model that provides for the military training of every adult male in Poland in case of war, and we will make the formed reserve adequate to potential threats," he said in a speech in the Sejm.
Donald Tusk noted that the Ukrainian army currently numbers 800 soldiers, while the Russian army has about 1,3 million. The Polish army, including reservists, should increase to 500 people from the current, according to his calculations, approximately 200.

"If we do it right, and I am in constant consultation with the Minister of Defence, we will have to use several options. This means using reservists, as well as intensive training so that those who do not join the army become full-fledged and competent soldiers during a conflict," the Prime Minister explained.
According to him, women can also undergo military training, but “war is still largely the domain of men.”
Tusk said his government was closely studying France's proposal to extend its nuclear umbrella to Europe.
“First of all, I want to know in detail what this means in terms of power over this weapon,” he noted.
Tusk stressed that Ukraine was attacked after it gave up its nuclear arsenal, so Warsaw wants to acquire its own nuclear weapons.
"It is clear today that we will be safer if we ensure our own nuclear arsenal. In any case, the path to this will be very long, and for this it is necessary to come to a consensus," he concluded.
This year, Poland plans to spend 4,7% of its GDP on defense, the highest figure in NATO.
Tusk told parliament that spending should be increased to 5% of GDP.
Earlier, President Andrzej Duda proposed amending the constitution to set these costs at 4% of GDP.
The Prime Minister, he said, supports Poland's withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, which bans the use of anti-personnel mines, including the Dublin Convention, which does not allow the use of cluster munitions.
Poland has sharply increased defense spending following Russia's full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in 2022.
It has signed arms contracts with the United States worth about $20 billion, including 250 M1A2 Abrams battle tanks, 32 F-35 fighters, 96 Apache helicopters, Javelin missiles and multiple launch rocket systems.
In addition, Warsaw signed contracts with South Korea for the purchase of K2 tanks and FA-50 light combat aircraft.
