'Chernobyl Dogs': Airbnb Offers Trip to Exclusion Zone to Help Animals

When the residents of Pripyat left the city in 1986 due to the Chernobyl accident, they were forced to leave their pets. Soon after, a soldier was called into the city to exterminate the animals, thus preventing the spread of radiation. True, some locals attached heartbreaking notes to the doors of their homes, begging the soldiers to spare their dogs. Many animals survived despite the high levels of radiation, severe Ukrainian winters and food shortages. The descendants of these brave animals still live in the exclusion zone and receive veterinary assistance as part of the Chernobyl Dogs program.

Now you can help them through the program Airbnb Animal Experiences, approved by the World Organization for the Protection of Animals. This project gives you the opportunity to visit the 30-kilometer exclusion zone and contribute as a volunteer. According to the organizers, dogs "love when people from all over the world feed and care for them."

The Chernobyl Dogs program has treated more than 1500 animals over the past three years. She manages shelters and clinics in Pripyat, and also sterilizes and vaccinates dogs to keep their numbers under control.

The program is managed by the Clean Future Fund, an American non-professional foundation that also runs health programs for Chernobyl liquidators, current Chernobyl workers, patients, and children with disabilities in areas affected by the nuclear disaster.

After meeting these wonderful dogs, helping, feeding and playing, volunteers go on an excursion to Pripyat, which after the tragic events of 1986 of the year turned into a ghost town.
