A mansion south of Palm Beach, Florida was sold for $173 million. The acquisition set a record as the most expensive residential property ever to change hands in Florida. It was bought by a company controlled by billionaire programmer, Oracle founder Larry Ellison. What is so special about this house, said the publication Palm Beach Daily News.

The company, controlled by Oracle's billionaire computer programmer Larry Ellison, bought an estate in Manalapan from Netscape co-founder Jim Clark.

In Manalapan, the level of sales has already exceeded the average. A little over $20 million worth of real estate is typically sold in the area. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Florida real estate market has been glutted. As the supply of coastal estates in Palm Beach dwindled, buyers increasingly turned their attention to the south, in particular to Manalapan and its properties, which led to its appreciation there.

Clark purchased the estate at 2000 S. Ocean Blvd. and part of nearby Bird Island in February 2021 for a combined price recorded of $94,37 million, though sources familiar with the deal said more than $100 million actually changed hands in the deal.

What is the name of the estate

The name of the estate Gemini ("Twins") comes from the principle of building the main house on both sides of South Ocean Boulevard.

The house has access to the beach and the ocean

The 15,65-acre (6,3 ha) ocean-to-lake estate is divided by South Ocean Boulevard, it has 1200 feet (365 m) of beach along the Atlantic Ocean and 1300 feet (396 m) of frontage in Lake Worth Lagoon.

Number of bedrooms and bathrooms in the estate

Several buildings on the site offer almost 85 square feet (000 sq m) of living space inside and out, with 7 bedrooms, 896 bathrooms and 33 toilets.

What does the main house look like?

The main residence consists of 12 bedrooms and 62 square feet (200 sq m) of living space. The interior is full of stone, wood, a grand staircase, and extensive walls lined with an art collection. The ceilings are decorated with coffered beams, exposed beams and many cypress details. The layout includes formal and informal living areas, as well as a dining room, media room, libraries, offices, wine cellar and two elevators.

There is a guest house

Other accommodations are two four-bedroom beachfront cottages, a seven-bedroom guest house, and a guest or staff home consisting of four studios and suites.

Others famous estate details

The two parts of the main house (one overlooking the lake and the other overlooking the ocean) are connected by a series of tunnels under the street. The tunnel is 15 feet (4,5 m) wide and serves as an art gallery.

The estate has extensive botanical gardens featuring nearly 1500 tropical species, as well as a bird sanctuary and a butterfly garden.

Leisure facilities include a driving range, tennis court, basketball court, fresh water pond, 18-hole mini golf course, boat pier and swimming pool.

Project Author

The original house was designed by architect Marion Sims Wyeth. It was built in the 1940s for the Lambert Pharmaceutical family.

Mansion redesign

A complete transformation of the property, commissioned by the Ziff family and completed in 2002, included a refurbishment of the residence designed by renowned Palm Beach architect Edson Daly.
