A teenager from Illinois shot a man on the orders of his mother: no one will be punished for this murder

A Chicago woman who was arrested for murder after she allegedly ordered her 14-year-old son to shoot a man at a diner was released June 25. The prosecutor's office dropped the charges against her and the teenager, reports New York Post.

Karlisha Hood, 35, and her son were charged with first-degree murder last week. On June 18, Hood's son shot and killed 32-year-old Jeremy Brown at the Maxwell Street Express diner.

Hood and Brown had an argument while waiting for food, and the mother allegedly texted her son, who was waiting in the car, to help her. The teenager was accused of shooting a man with his mother's firearm on her orders.

However, new evidence emerged over the weekend that forced Cook County prosecutors to reconsider the charges.

A previously unseen video of Brown brutally hitting Hood on the head in a restaurant began circulating on social media.

“In light of new evidence, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office has decided to drop charges against Karlisha Hood and her 14-year-old son,” the office said in a June 26 statement. “Based on the facts, the evidence and the law, we cannot bear the burden of prosecuting this case.”

Both Hood, who was held on $3 million bail, and her son, who was held without bail in a juvenile detention center, were released after the charges were dropped. The lawyer and the Hood family said they feel justice has finally been served and are relieved to see mom and son back home.

How it all happened

Police released footage showing a minor entering a restaurant and allegedly shooting Brown in the back.

According to prosecutors, Hood was in line for food when she and Brown began to fight. But a new video showed Brown threatening to hit his mother if she "says another word" before punching her in the head.

When Hood hides in a corner, he hits her at least twice more while the other patrons flee the small building.

The video cuts off after the sound of a gunshot.

It was at this point that the 14-year-old entered the building and witnessed his mother being beaten, prosecutors said. He pulled out a gun that his mother was entitled to carry, according to a local television station, and allegedly shot Brown in the back.

The wounded man fled the restaurant, but the teenager and his mother began to pursue him. The mother reportedly asks her son to kill the man. According to prosecutors, the teenager fired several more shots, hitting Brown a total of two times.

The man later died from his injuries.

The mother then allegedly ordered her son to shoot the woman who was laughing and cheering Brown on during an earlier argument, prosecutors said, according to the initial report.

Hood reportedly tried to take the gun from her son, but he pushed her away and both fled in her car without harming the woman.

CBS legal counsel said the mother and son acted in self-defense.

“You have the right to use deadly force to stop another person using force against you. That's what happened in this case, and that's why the state's attorney's office closed this case today,” said legal analyst Miller.

Neither Hood nor her son had a previous conviction.
